Take shelter — the right one
June 10, 2025
When you’re cold, wet, or just need shelter fast, there’s no room for gimmicks. Whether you call it a poncho, protective bag, wind-sack, or tarp system, this category of gear is meant to be one thing above all: dependable.
But which one should you choose?
We’ve taken a close look at some of the best-known options — from traditional Norwegian mountain covers to modern tactical hybrids — and compared them on what truly matters in the wild: waterproofness, warmth, size, weight, packability, durability, versatility, price, and carbon footprint.
We made a tool based on the criterias and score listed below.

Criterion 1 – Price
What we measured: We looked strictly at the listed retail price. There’s no evaluation of price-performance or product quality. Some listings were unclear about whether stuff sacks or loose components were included.
Why: Price is obviously important in your decision. When buying multifunctional gear, it’s not just about saving weight and space in your pack — it’s also a way to avoid buying multiple pieces of equipment.
Product | Score | Price (NOK) | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Swagman Roll | 9 | 1500 | Lowest price |
Honcho Poncho | 9 | 1550 | Low price |
Dovrefjell Custom Hunt | 8 | 2199 | Good price for size |
Mountain Serape | 7 | 2400 | Mid-range price |
Helsport X-Trem | 6 | 2700 | Mid-range price |
Jerven Hunter | 4 | 5450 | Expensive quality |
UR Trygg ShelterWear | 2 | 7800 | Most expensive |
Criterion 2 – Waterproofness
What we measured: The water column rating of the outer shell was our main indicator. We also evaluated design, seams, and zipper construction. We didn’t assess long-term durability or abrasion resistance of coatings and materials.
Why: How well the fabric protects against precipitation is critical to how well it protects you, and how much you’ll enjoy using it.
Product | Score | Water Column (mm) | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
UR Trygg ShelterWear | 10 | 15-20,000+ | Completely lasting waterproof |
Dovrefjell Custom Hunt | 8 | 8,000 | 3 times PU-coated |
Helsport X-Trem | 8 | 5,000 | PU membrane, good weather protection |
Jerven Hunter | 7 | 5,000 | PU-coated with sealed construction |
Mountain Serape | 5 | Not specified | Water-resistant, not waterproof |
Swagman Roll | 5 | Not specified | DWR-treated, light weather protection |
Honcho Poncho | 4 | Not specified | Basic waterproofing, intended for light use |
Criterion 3 – CLO Values
What we measured: We mainly evaluated the insulation materials by their CLO values. Design-related thermal performance, like windproofness or how well the product traps heat through its form or closure system, was not included. This to maintain objective comparability.
Why: One of the main reasons to carry a shelter is to keep yourself and your group warm.
Product | Score | Insulation Type | CLO (Dry) | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
Jerven Hunter | 8 | Primaloft Silver | 1.90 | Highest warmth, also when wet |
Mountain Serape | 7 | Climashield Apex | ~1.84 | High insulation level |
Dovrefjell Custom Hunt | 6 | Thinsulate | ~1.60 | Reliable and field-proven insulation |
Helsport X‑Trem | 6 | Thermoguard 6000 | ~1.60 | HelSports own insulation |
UR Trygg ShelterWear | 6 | Primaloft Gold Pure | 1.55 | High warmth-to-weight efficiency |
Swagman Roll | 5 | Polyester (synthetic) | ~1.40 | Basic insulation for flexible use |
Honcho Poncho | 5 | eraLoft (polyester) | ~1.40 | Comfort rather than performance |
Criterion 4 – Size
What we measured: We ranked the products based on unfolded surface area.
Why: We believe size matters, as it indicates how much protection the shelter can offer, and opens up possibilities of what it can be used for.
Product | Score | Dimensions (cm) | Surface Area (m²) | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|
UR Trygg ShelterWear | 9 | 170 × 270 | 4.59 | Size and shape for more than one |
Dovrefjell Custom Hunt | 8 | 222 × 204 | 4.53 | Full size with integrated hood |
Jerven Hunter | 8 | 220 × 204 | 4.49 | Classic full-sized mountain cover |
Mountain Serape | 6 | 168 × 224 | 3.76 | Good size, versatile rectangular form |
Helsport X-Trem | 6 | 160 × 230 | 3.68 | Compact but functional for solo use |
Swagman Roll | 4 | 150 × 200 | 3.00 | More poncho-sized, prioritizes packability |
Honcho Poncho | 4 | 142 × 200 | 2.84 | Smallest overall footprint |
Criterion 5 – Pack Size
What we measured: We used the manufacturers’ listed dimensions for the included stuff sack or available storage system.
Why: Our pack is never small enough, and there’s always something valuable that has to stay behind if we don’t pack smart.
Product | Score | Volume (L) | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Mountain Serape | 10 | 4.2 | Most compact in test, and easy to bring |
UR Trygg ShelterWear | 9 | 4.7 | Very compact considering its size |
Swagman Roll | 6 | 7.1 | Acceptable volume for its insulation |
Jerven Hunter | 6 | 7.1 | Acceptable volume for its size and functions |
Dovrefjell Custom Hunt | 6 | 7.1 | Same volume as Jerven, includes hood |
Helsport X-Trem | 5 | 7.9 | Slightly bulkier but still manageable |
Honcho Poncho | 2 | 14.5 | Largest packed volume by far. Add stuffsack? |
Criterion 6 – Weight
What we measured: Dry weight only, for objective comparison — even though several of these products will absorb moisture and become significantly heavier in wet conditions.
Why: Because our pack is never light enough, and a lighter load makes the trip more enjoyable.
Product | Score | Weight (g) | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
Honcho Poncho | 10 | 660 | Lightest in test, even if largest pack size |
Swagman Roll | 9 | 750 | Lightweight and compressible |
UR Trygg ShelterWear | 8 | 950 | Ultralight weight relative to size |
Mountain Serape | 6 | 1270 | Higher insulation weight, still well-balanced |
Jerven Hunter | 5 | 1500 | Rugged design and zippers add weight |
Dovrefjell Custom Hunt | 5 | 1500 | Same weight as Jerven, includes hood |
Helsport X-Trem | 4 | 1700 | Heaviest in test, full insulation coverage |
Criterion 7 – Implied & Expressed Warranty
What we measured: We looked at the manufacturer’s stated warranty. There are major differences here, and some information was difficult to find or interpret. We also evaluated how easy the brand makes it to file a claim. Lifetime with simple handling gets a top score. When no warranty is stated, we still awarded 4 points, since implied warranties apply — you’re not left without rights if something goes wrong.
Why: Because it’s important to know the brand has your back when something fails. For your sake — and for the nature you move through.
Product | Score | Warranty Type | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
UR Trygg ShelterWear | 10 | Lifetime | Lifetime warranty. User-friendly digital process |
Honcho Poncho | 9 | Lifetime | Backed by full lifetime guarantee |
Mountain Serape | 9 | Lifetime | Lifetime warranty listed by Hill People Gear |
Jerven Hunter | 7 | 10 years | Stated duration, but lacks detailed terms |
Dovrefjell Custom Hunt | 4 | Not specified | No stated warranty, but falls under implied rights |
Helsport X-Trem | 4 | Not specified | No stated warranty, but falls under implied rights |
Swagman Roll | 4 | Not specified | No stated warranty, but falls under implied rights |
Criterion 8 – Versatility
What we measured: We used simple, consistent principles to avoid bias. We looked only at the number of clear use modes (poncho, bivy, tarp, windsack, etc.), not how well each function is implemented. The Norwegian products, in our view, cover the full range of expected uses — and they each received 10 points to reflect that.
Why: Versatility is the brilliance of this type of product. But that’s not always obvious when browsing a website.
Product | Score | Modes Supported | Notes |
---|---|---|---|
UR Trygg ShelterWear | 10 | Poncho, wind sack, bivy, stretcher, tarp, groundsheet, pairable | Includes integraded hood and front pocket for poncho |
Jerven Hunter | 10 | Poncho, wind sack, bivy, stretcher, tarp, groundsheet, pairable | Classic design, proven field use |

Helsport X-Trem | 10 | Poncho, wind sack, bivy, stretcher, tarp, groundsheet, pairable | Versatile Norwegian design with good modularity |
Mountain Serape | 6 | Poncho, blanket, half-zip sleeping bag, underquilt | Higher insulation, wearable warmth, partial sleep system |
Swagman Roll | 6 | Poncho, blanket, sleeping bag liner, underquilt | Compatible with USGI poncho liners (woobie) for rain protection |
Honcho Poncho | 3 | Poncho, blanket | Limited versatility beyond static camp use |
Criterion 9 – CO₂ Performance
What we measured: While we wait for new EU regulations — expected to take effect by 2030 — that will require standardized environmental impact data, we’ve focused on the most critical factors and assessed estimated CO₂ impact from cradle to store shelf. Most brands offer very little transparency, but in our view, this product category is far behind garments like jackets and pants.
We found no information from competitors about the use of PFAS-free or recycled materials. We’ve rated UR Trygg a 9, pending a full life cycle assessment (LCA), because it is clearly far ahead of the competition. In our opinion, other manufacturers need to do better.
As a baseline, we’ve given those who provide no data a score of 3. Products that use aluminum coating on the inside of the shell as a waterproof barrier have been penalized one additional point due to its environmental footprint.
Why: As people who spend time in nature, we want to leave the smallest possible footprint. We should demand the same of the gear we use.
Product | Score | Notes |
---|---|---|
UR Trygg ShelterWear | 9 | Bio-based Dyneema®, Primaloft Gold Pure, recycled liner and zippers, PFAS-free. |
Honcho Poncho | 3 | No environmental claims, no recycled content disclosed. |
Swagman Roll | 3 | No mention of material sourcing, certifications, or recycled inputs. |
Mountain Serape | 3 | No public info on sustainability or footprint; durable build, but no transparency. |
Jerven Hunter | 2 | Aluminium coating used; no eco disclosures, unknown DWR or PFAS status. |
Dovrefjell Custom Hunt | 2 | Uses aluminium-coated inner fabric; no info on environmental considerations or material origin. |
Helsport X-Trem | 2 | Aluminium-layer membrane, no claims on recycled or PFAS-free materials. |
